School Group Programs

For educators, the house is a wonderful resource for students of all ages. Information on the house touches on a variety of subjects such as art, music, and even science and math.  There is a plethora of information that may be used for writing papers of all kinds, even as inspiration for creative writing.

Gaineswood offers two-hour programs for all age students. Programs might include a scavenger hunt, tour of the home and hands-on activities. Areas of study are Alabama History, Life in the 1800’s, Innovations, Architecture, and Music.                                                                                                                                             Call to schedule a program.  Students are $4.00 each and scholarships are available.

Heritage Days

  Heritage Days is an annual educational event provided for elementary students studying Alabama History. 
It is a full day of demonstrations and hands-on-learning opportunities about life in the mid 1800’s.   
Some of the areas of learning include blacksmithing, weaving, working the fields, travel, Native American culture, music of both planter and enslaved families, and the life of a French Marine living at a frontier outpost. 
 Each student also tours Whitfield’s Greek Revival mansion and learns of life on a southern plantation.

Sartain Print

           In 1860, Mobile photographer Chauncey Barnes took a photograph of Gaineswood. The photo was sent to John Sartain in Philadelphia the premier engraver on steel in America.  He created engraving plates from the photograph.  The image shows Gaineswood at its finest, its landscaped grounds, members of the Whitfield family and enslaved people.
